Barry Sears designed the zone diet in response to the obesity epidemic. His theory is that humans are designed as primarily meat-eaters, and that the over consumption of carbohydrates is leading to obesity. He identified an optimal ratio for each meal as 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein and 30% fat and bases his eating plan on meals that contain this ratio. The basic principle is that by returning to the diet of our ancestors, based primarily on meat, fruit and vegetables we can lose weight and gain health.

How does the zone diet work?

The basic theory of the diet is that by controlling the amount of protein, carbohydrate and fat eaten at each meal to a strict 40/30/30 ratio the body enters its optimal zone, which the zone diet is named after. In this zone insulin production is controlled and the laying down of spare calories as fat is minimized. The low calorie aspect of the Zone diet leads to weight loss. Advocates of the zone diet say that it is close to the recommended diet of the American Heart Association, critics, including the American Heart Association, categorize it as another high protein fad diet. The ratio of fat seems high to many experts and this has led to most of the criticism of it.

There is no doubt that the Zone diet can lead to weight loss and improved health for people who have an existing poor diet. As a long-term option there are probably better diets to aim for. The Zone diet plan can be viewed as a stepping-stone to long-term healthy eating goals if you have the time and patience to follow it. The zone diet is easy to follow if your normal diet closely approaches it any way, but in that case you are unlikely to achieve maximum benefits from it.
